Counselor/Drop Out Prevention Coordinator

Summary
The Drop Out/Counselor position is a split position and requires the individual to engage in all high
school activities that ultimately assist the student in graduating with their cohort of peers and prepare
for postsecondary academic/work related challenges and opportunities. The work requires
DOP/counselors to work with students, school staff, parents, guardians and community members in
order to support high school students with course completion and high school graduation. The
DOP/Counselor may work with students individually and/or in groups. Work responsibilities may
include, but are not limited to: analyzing data to identify students or subgroups with potential for
not graduating on time; planning, implementing, and tracking individual high school graduation plans;
identifying and resolving barriers to graduation; and facilitating career choices and planning through
the registration process.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
Drop Out Prevention/Counselors :
- Collaborate with SISP (Specialized Instructional Support Personnel) to identify students
at-risk in accordance with MTSS criteria for academics, behavior, social-emotional needs and
attendance issues.
- Working knowledge of appropriate strategies for reducing behaviors that put students at risk
of not graduating from high school which includes joint home visits with other district and
school SISP (Specialized Instructional Support Personnel) team members and School
Administration.
- Develops and implements individual intervention strategies to increase the likelihood that
these students will stay in school and graduate by developing a graduation and achievement
plan to include the best program to meet their academic and post-secondary goals.
- Assist with college applications and scholarship searches. May also sit in as a member of the
scholarship selection committee.
- Works collaboratively with teams and outside support staff such as College Advisers,
Rockingham Community College (RCC)Career Coaches, RCC College and Career Promise
Advisers.
- Conducts parent/student conferences and/or joins in conferences with other SISP members
and/or School Administration.
- Within the role of the counselor, may coordinate and participate in 504, IEP, SIT, PBIS/MTSS
and other school required meetings such as CASA.
- Consult with teachers and conduct classroom observations for MTSS concerns.
- Conducts an analysis that focuses on data for individual students and subgroups such as local
standardized tests; Benchmark Assessment, local records of attendance, behavior, National
Standardized Tests: Pre-ACT, Pre-SAT, SAT, ACT and any and all End of Course tests.
- Knowledge of and the ability to analyze data, including data available from the North Carolina
Department of Public Instruction, local assessments, DOP Rates/Graduation Rates.
- Knowledge of alternative education opportunities, e.g., Apex Learning, Credit Recovery,
NCVPS, and other schools that allow acceptable transfers.
- Works directly with the Testing and Accountability Department to submit timely data into
RCC’s Data Mart in order to provide accurate information for the Cohort Graduation Rate and
Drop Out Rate for Rockingham County Schools.
- In this dual role, the DOP/Counselor should collaborate with the Career Development
Coordinators at each high school to gain helpful knowledge of the student’s interest and
aptitude in Career and Technical courses through the academies, RockATop and other career
courses and opportunities offered through RCC.
- With Remote Instruction, works with teachers/administration to track grade retention, credits
earned, attendance in virtual sessions and participation in submitting assignments in Canvas.
- Must understand the multiplicity of social services available in the community that support
students at risk of not graduating and they facilitate the connection with the families to
ensure they are well informed.
- Attend required district level professional development workshops and participate in regional
or state-wide professional development as needed.
- Participate in Risk Assessment requirements of Drop Out/Counselors as described by the
Executive Director of Behavioral Health
- Participate in other school-wide student support programs such as (e.g. Angle Tree, Mix-it-up,
and Back Pack) Character Education, Cyberbullying, and Red Ribbon Week.
- Collects and maintains appropriate documentation of services provided to students,
student/family contacts, tiered supports and intervention strategies offered, and submits
monthly counselor reports in a timely manner.
- Must possess excellent organizational skills.
- Must possess excellent communication skills both written and verbal.
- Must be sensitive to cultural differences among individuals and groups of persons
- Must possess an upbeat and positive approach to the job and be viewed as a solution finder,
not a negative thinker.
- Must possess strong computer skills and have extensive knowledge of on-line instructional
processes.
- Provides and/or submits reports to the principal, Assistant Superintendent of Instructional
Support Services upon request; and
- Other duties as assigned.
