Position Summary:

Under limited supervision, performs a variety of professional and administrative tasks in directing RCS’s beginning teacher support program (BTSP) and implementation of advanced teaching roles. Work involves planning and providing an induction and training program for beginning teachers and maintaining files and records related to beginning teachers and mentors. Also performs a variety of tasks involving planning and directing the overall professional development of beginning teachers, alternatively licensed teachers, and mentor teachers. This role is responsible for assessing system-wide staff development needs for RCS’s beginning teacher program, setting specific goals; developing training programs to meet specified needs, evaluating the effectiveness of implemented programs, and overseeing the maintenance of Beginning Teacher Support Program (BTSP) monitoring by NCDPI.  Additionally, this role collaborates closely with district and school-based leadership—including human resources, communications, curriculum and instruction, and finance—to organize and disseminate information about advanced teaching roles, develop and provide support for staff members in advanced teaching roles, and continuously monitor fidelity of advanced teaching roles implementation and progress throughout the district.

 

Beginning Teacher Support:

  • Ensures the Beginning Teacher Support Program (BTSP) is aligned to state requirements/standards and district goals. Maintains appropriate documentation for district and state-required expectations for beginning teachers, alternatively-licensed teachers, and mentors in the district.
  •  Collaborates with principals to develop support plans for beginning teachers and conducts informal observations of beginning teachers.
  • Plans, develops, and coordinates a mentoring program for beginning teachers, that includes conducting orientation and training for mentors. Supports principals in the selection and assignment of mentors.  Maintains accurate records on mentors in the district.
  • Implements effective coaching rounds for Beginning Teachers that include model lessons.   
  • Conducts licensure reviews to verify program codes and determine appropriate beginning teacher status.
  • Maintains appropriate data to ensure that teachers who hold an initial license have completed all required coursework, NCSBE approved examinations have been passed, and the teacher has completed three years of teaching to be able to convert to a continuing license.
  • Collects data on why beginning teachers are leaving the teaching profession for the State of the Teaching Profession in NC Report.

Advanced Teaching Roles

  • Anticipates and responds appropriately to adjustments needed to keep advanced teaching roles design and implementation progressing, if/when barriers arise 
  • Sets and maintains rigorous selection criteria for applicable advanced teaching roles, with a focus on serving students whose needs historically have not been well met
  • Facilitates advanced teaching roles design sessions for teachers and district and school leaders
  • Communicates information to internal and external staff and stakeholders to successfully promote advanced teaching roles
  •  Ensures that the district and each participating school continue to maintain fidelity, through robust plans and implementation of advanced teaching roles
  • Coordinates with district departments to gather, analyze, and communicate advanced teaching role outcomes and fidelity of implementation
  • Responds to data and feedback from educators in advanced teaching roles to continuously improve practices that are barriers to success
  • Regularly visit schools to gather observational data on advanced teaching roles implementation.
  • Attends and actively participates in coaching calls designed to support principals of schools with advanced teaching roles.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Serves as the primary point of contact for colleges/universities for student teaching placements.
  • Facilitates in the planning, development, and coordination of National Board Certification training and support.
  • Coordinates the selection process and recognition of the district’s Teacher of the Year, Beginning Teacher of Excellence, Principal of the Year and Assistant Principal of the Year. 
  •  Assists with implementation and oversight of employee evaluation and licensure systems, including but not limited to the NC Educators’ Evaluation System for licensed employees.
  • Supports onboarding for international faculty.
  • Attends and participates in human resources staff meetings, external committees, professional development, recruitment events, and other school system functions, as appropriate.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs)

  • Considerable knowledge of the Beginning Teacher Support Program;
  • Considerable knowledge of policies governing North Carolina Professional Educator’s Licensure requirements including the licensure renewal process;
  • Considerable knowledge of NCEES and the overall evaluation process of professional staff;
  • Considerable knowledge of Microsoft Office, specifically Word, Excel, and PowerPoint; Google Apps;
  • Considerable knowledge in instructional coaching;
  • Critical thinking and problem–solving skills;
  • Ability to utilize coaching skills to support planning, reflection, and problem resolution;
  • Ability to design and deliver professional learning to adults;
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both in oral and written form, using a variety of communication techniques and tools to ensure the appropriate flow of information, collaborative efforts, and feedback;
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with teachers, administrators, support staff, and other key stakeholders.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team setting.

 

Qualifications

Master’s degree in Education preferred, and 5 to 7 years of experience teaching including program coordination; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Must maintain a valid North Carolina Educator’s license.  Must possess a valid North Carolina driver's license.
